Lucy Star Satellite is a band from Brisbane.
"Built around Deb Suckling’s keening voice and deftly picked/strummed acoustic and Craig Spann’s reverb-drenched Telecaster, Lucy Star Satellite came together as a side project from the two’s previous sojourns in Brindle and The Peachfish.
A tight-knit live unit, it took them a while to make a record due to various other commitments, but here it finally is. Recorded by Jamie Trevaskis – Brisbane’s own Jim Dickinson, Phil Ek, Tony Cohen, etc. – the self-titled record neatly captures the four-piece’s live essence while giving an idea of how The Paradise Motel could sound like if they replaced Merida Sussex with PJ Harvey.
This Little Heart immediately sets the tone for the rest of the album: minor-key guitar progressions; cavernous echo; haunting, desolate vibe. Arguably the busiest drummer in Brisbane, Chris O’Neill expertly shifts gears between different songs, often swapping sticks for brushes and seamlessly locking with Vicki Watson’s minimalist basslines. Suckling and Spann’s songwriting skills are hardly buried under the (mostly sparse) instrumental mix, too. She Said is a wonderfully doleful, finger-picked number, the vocal-free title track is suitably cinematic in feel and The Lone Ranger is a murder ballad par excellence."
